What does it mean?

The rainbow colour choices are influenced by the gay pride flag and symbolises healing energy, peace and abundance. The incorporation of the iconic British telephone booth refers to communication and the importance of proclaiming these positive cultural values from the United Kingdom and our respect for the beautiful diversity around the world.

The UK Pride Mural was co-designed by Lisa Marie Thalhammer (artist), British Embassy Washington (sponsor) and the Little Gay Pub (location). The floral arrangement on the mural represents the four nations of the United Kingdom – the Rose of England, the Thistle of Scotland, the Daffodil of Wales and the Shamrock of Northern Ireland.

The UK and the LGBTQIA+ community

The UK champions and supports grassroots LGBTQIA+ organisations and human rights defenders globally through targeted programmes and direct engagement. Our network of over 280 diplomatic missions monitors and raises awareness of human rights in their host countries and, through diplomatic lobbying, seek to influence and support countries on the path to greater equality. The British Embassy in Washington has participated in D.C.’s Capital Pride events since 2010.

Our Great Love campaign is a celebration of the UK’s diverse and flourishing LGBTQIA+ community. In this campaign, twelve members of the UK LGBTQIA+ community share their intimate, personal stories with us. Each of them reference an object or objects that represent a pivotal moment of time in their lives, when they felt included, seen and a part of a bigger community. Head over to the Great Love page to read their stories and share your #GREATLoveStories too.
